Im Jahr 1613 beauftragte das niederländische Parlament (Generalstaaten) Otto van Veen, zwölf Gemälde zu malen, die den Aufstand der Bataver gegen die Römer in den Jahren 69 und 70 n. Chr. darstellen. Diese wurden im Binnenhof, dem zentralen Regierungsgebäude in Den Haag, ausgestellt. In den Anfangsjahren der niederländischen Republik verglichen viele ihren eigenen Aufstand gegen Spanien mit dem Batavischen Aufstand.
